About the Hall

Appledore Community Hall opened in 1950 to provide a much-needed public meeting space for the residents of Appledore and surrounding areas.  Formerly on the site was a blacksmith’s shop serving the well-established shipbuilding industry.  The adjacent Richmond Dry Dock opened in 1856.

It was always intended that the hall would be used for the community and available for hire through a management committee of Trustees, and this is still the case. The Trustees are made up of local residents who are responsible for its management, raising funds, maintenance and updating its amenities, as well as administration of the charity on behalf of its beneficiaries.

Originally the beneficiaries were the people of Appledore, but now the charity is open to a wider audience is and firmly established as a hall for a variety of events and functions across all needs and members of the community.

The Club Rooms

The Club Rooms are adjacent to the Community Hall and are also available for hire.

There are three spaces – The Lounge, The Dance-floor, and the Snug Bar – which can be screened from each other, or hired as one large space.

This was the former Appledore Social Club, which closed in 2023, and is now part of the Community Hall complex. See ‘Specification’ for further details.

A blue plaque was unveiled outside the Community Hall to mark the 600th Anniversary of the Northam Charities who ran an historic almshouse which also used to stand on this site.
The plaque was unveiled by Devon historian Todd Gray MBE as part of the 2023 Appledore Book Festival.
